Counselling for First Responders
Supporting those who show up when we need them the most.
Our Understanding
You run toward what others run from. Day after day, you carry the weight of difficult calls, long shifts, and moments most people will never see. At Newcastle Counselling Services, we offer a confidential space to set some of that weight down, with clinicians who understand the realities of the job.
We understand that first responder culture often values strength, composure, and pushing through. While those qualities can help you do the job, they can also make it hard to ask for help when the stress follows you home. Reaching out isn't a sign that you can't handle it. It's a way of making sure you can keep doing the work you care about, and keep showing up for the people in your life.
Who We Serve
-
Policing means facing unpredictable situations and the pressure of split-second decisions. We help officers process critical incidents, manage chronic stress, and protect their wellbeing on and off duty.
-
Firefighters carry the physical and emotional toll of fires, rescues, and medical calls. We offer support for trauma, sleep disruption, and the strain shift work can put on home life.
-
Paramedics are often first on scene for life-and-death moments, with little time to recover between calls. We help with cumulative stress, difficult outcomes, and the fatigue that comes with long, demanding shifts.
-
Dispatchers hear crises unfold in real time, often without ever learning how a call ended. We understand the unique stress of this role and help with the anxiety, helplessness, and emotional load it can create.
-
This includes emergency nurses, search and rescue teams, tow operators, and others who regularly respond to crisis and trauma. If your work puts you on the front line, our door is open.
-
Retirement can bring unexpected challenges, from memories that surface later to the loss of identity and team. We help retirees make sense of their career and adjust to life after the job.
-
Partners, children, and loved ones feel the effects of the job too. We offer support for families navigating stress, communication, and connection at home.
How We Can Help
1.
Built Around Your Schedule
We know shift work doesn't fit a 9-to-5 calendar. We offer flexible appointment times, plus in-person sessions in Newcastle or virtual sessions anywhere in Ontario, so support fits around your rotation.
2.
Trauma-Informed Care
Our clinicians use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and more with a trauma-informed lens to help you process critical incidents, reduce stress responses, and feel more like yourself.
3.
Practical Skill Building
Our sessions focus on strategies you can use right away, from calming your body after a tough call to sleeping better between shifts and switching off when you get home.
